Infertility Q & A

When is infertility diagnosed?

You may be eager to get pregnant right away, but it can take several months of trying. A couple who has had regular intercourse without any birth control for one year but still hasn’t conceived should consider an infertility workup. For women 35 or older, infertility is diagnosed after six months of actively trying to get pregnant.

What are the causes of infertility?

Infertility doesn’t have just one cause. It can be due to issues with the woman or the man. In some cases, infertility can result due to problems with both partners.

Sometimes, despite comprehensive screening and analysis, the cause for infertility can’t be determined. Even in these cases, some couples can go on to have a successful pregnancy.

How is infertility evaluated?

The doctors at OB/GYN Associates of Miami have a woman undergo a number of screening tests once infertility is diagnosed.

These tests may include:

  • Blood tests to check for hormone issues or infection
  • In-house ultrasound to look for uterine or other organ abnormalities
  • Ovulation evaluation via ultrasound
  • Pelvic exam
  • Hysterosalpingogram to look for blocked fallopian tubes

The male partner’s sperm is evaluated for quality and quantity. The team has a discussion with you and your partner about lifestyle habits, such as smoking or drug use, that may affect fertility.

How is female infertility addressed?

Lifestyle changes can be effective in boosting fertility. The team at OB/GYN Associates of Miami counsels you on proper nutrition, weight loss (if you’re overweight), and fertility tracking.

Women who are infertile due to ovulation issues may benefit from prescription hormones or other medications that stimulate ovulation, which is the release of a viable egg.

If scar tissue or some type of abnormal tissue growth is hampering the function of your reproductive organs, you may undergo minimally invasive surgery to have it removed. Fibroids, endometriosis, and uterine scar tissue are examples of problematic tissue.

Some couples require intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization to successfully achieve pregnancy. The doctors discuss all of your options with you, and together you develop a treatment plan you’re comfortable with going forward.
